I just had to share the amazing work of Cayce Zavaglia. A painter by trade, her embroidered portraits are incredibly detailed and look more like paintings than hoop work when you stand back to look at them.
Why not give your own masterpiece a go?

This month’s project has been all about using the humble embroidery hoop to create art… not necessarily embroidered art. So today I thought I would share with you some great examples of out of the hoop thinking.

I love this because it’s almost graphical in nature. I love a good colour gradient at the best of times but this one is so simple and so powerful that it would make a great punch of colour in any room. (Just getting all those nails to line up would be a little tricky… )

I love the new trend in using maps to decorate and this is a great way to do that. It works as a great way to highlight countries and land masses. I love it. You could also do this with any image really. Sort of like the example given by Kellie in this post.

I love combining a couple of disciplines in the one project and these hexagon quilt patterns combined with a touch of embroidery are just too cute. A great way to use up any scraps you might have in your stash.

We live in a house that has an internal stairwell which means I have a two storey blank wall. I would love to do this to that entire wall. It’s a great way to get in a burst of colour, use up scrap materials (like tea towel, old linen or maybe even tshirts). I love it.
I hope you found something you like or something that has sparked your creative imagination in today’s selection. I know I’m off to hunt for second hand hoops… two storeys will require a lot of hoops!
Happy creating!
So as the end of our In the Hoop project draws to a close, I thought we might look for some different uses for our leftover or extra hoops.

Tote bags are fairly easy to make, so why not customise your own with a bit of embroidery.
Here are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing.

There is also a great tutorial on making your own tote bags on Sew Mamma Sew.
If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed this month with the idea of the Embroidery Hoop, never fear. I stumbled across this awesome DIY tutorial via Prudent Baby which is a fab site full of DIYs for baby.
This is so super easy, it’s sure to set you on an embroidery whirlwind! All you need is a good old hoop, some backing fabric, 3 colours of thread, a needle and a water soluble texta. Oh and some glue and scissors.
What are you waiting for – this is the perfect Sunday quick craft.
Enjoy
It’s no secret how much I love embroidery but sometimes, especially when I create pieces for friends, I worry that the types of things I make won’t fit in to modern decor. I spied the above piece in a post by the fabulous Jess at Epheriell Designs last year and wanted to get one as an engagement gift for a dear friend. Unfortunately the etsy store from which Jess sourced the image is no longer making the piece. SO that’s about as good an excuse as any to try making it myself no?
To do so I’ve sourced a few tutorials on making those pretty flowers…..I’ve found two really great ones that will give me a slightly fuller look than the above design but I think will be equally as pretty.
And this tutorial from Little Miss Momma looks absolutely perfect. Because it’s designed to sit on a headband I think it’ll be easier to attach to the material.
This tutorial by Katie Did looks similar and I love the colour splash inserted in.
For more flower tutorials there are a bunch listed here.
Of course I’ll show you how my project comes along.
Happy creating!
The one thing I find interesting about embroidery is its main uses. Here it is combined with one of my favourite things: paper.
As you know, I am a paper person. I love the stuff and can’t get enough of it – you only have to look at my paper racks to know that!
Whilst I was poking around looking for more inspiration involving Embroidery Hoops for this month’s project, I came across these two hoops below that have been altered using paper…..

I had not even thought about using paper to alter a hoop, but they look great!
Have you come across any hoops that have been altered with paper in your travels? I would love to see them if you have!
Happy Crafting!

I stumbled across this adorable tutorial on Sew Mamma Sew, showing how to hand stitch and embroider a little message to your special someone. You could even frame it in a small embroidery hoop afterward!
Of course you can also prick holes in a card and embroider it directly, or why not stick embroidered fabric to a card. Check out this lovely example I received from Gnomeangel.
